TheMoodieReport.com: "Alpha Retail has launched two Scottish Presence stores at Glasgow Prestwick Airport the first stand-alone units for the Scottish destination merchandise brand.

The new landside store was officially opened to the sound of bagpipes on 28 November, adding to the airside store, which opened earlier that month.

The outlets provide an extensive range of Scottish gifts and memorabilia. Both are intended to appeal to tourists visiting the country and patriotic Scots alike.

Scottish Presence product lines include knitwear, jewellery, pottery, candlesticks and cushions many of which are hand-crafted in Scotland. The assortment also includes postcards, preserves, shortbread, traditional and contemporary souvenirs, soft toys, T-shirts, china and confectionery.

The range of own-label Scottish Presence merchandise had previously only been available in the Scottish Presence concessions at the World News & BOOKSplus stores in Edinburgh and Aberdeen Airports respectively. The new stores at Prestwick are the first stand-alone units for the Scottish Presence brand.

Alpha Retail Marketing Manager Ben Deller said: This new store opening marks the growing success of our trio of British souvenir outlets. Glorious Britain and its two sister chains, Scottish Presence and Taste of Ulster (found at Belfast City and Belfast International airports) have gone from strength to strength over the past year and were delighted to be opening another landmark store. "

Alpha Retail at Manchester Airport: "Beauty to behold

Natalie Hamer, Perfume Department Manager at Manchester T2, loves the way the whole shop - incorporating liquor and tobacco, confectionery, electronics, fashion and accessories, and perfume & cosmetics works as a seamless unit.

'There's a huge variety between the three departments but also a nice cohesiveness,' she enthuses.

'We expanded by about 1,500sq ft at the front and opened it up around 18 months ago and over the past two months we have added a new YSL wall bay,' she says.

'It's much more inviting and friendly - you've got a nice flow and passengers can meander about.'

Adds David King: 'T2 was our big launch in upgrading our perfumes and cosmetics offer back in 2002.

The principle was brands, brands and brands - with a lot of suppliers putting in customised fittings. We created big space for big images. If you look around you'll see huge light boxes for example. It's the most fantastic, glamorous imagery.' The subsequent extension in 2004 was highlighted by the introduction of a MAC area and other leading brands.

There is also an emphasis on what King describes as 'Alpha grey'. He explains: 'We use it to de-feminise the area to some extent, knowing that around 50% of the passengers going through are men. We know that men are not comfortable with the white beauty parlour approach and are less likely to shop. Grey acts as a nice generic background for the brands' own fittings.'

Today, the beauty area has many highlights, including a men's bar, a new Givenchy wall bay and a dazzling Clarins area in prime position. MAC, a smash hit at Manchester, is very prominent at the front of the store while a new designer fragrances area is working well in the middle of the sho"

Alpha Retail at Manchester Airport: "Liquor, Tobacco & Confectionery

Walking into Manchester Airport with Phil Shilson and the Alpha team, one is immediately struck by how hard Manchester Airport is working to help its retail partners and lure its consumers airside.

Giant signs (pictured second top row middle) hang from the ceiling promoting the retail offer that lies within. The message is clear. It's time to go through departures and start shopping

Once airside in the new-look terminal two we walk around to the main entrance - a nice, open and alluring fragrances & cosmetics area refurbished 18 months ago. But we leave the beauty sector for later. Phil wants to show us his new baby first.

That's the revamped wines & spirits sector, a clean elegant new area where the value message is dominant. First up is the promotional area, offering 'any two for 30' or 'any two for 30'.

The elegance of the unit helps to send out a value rather than discount message. And it's paying off in a major way. Alpha Airport Shopping Head of Liquor and Tobacco Martin Petchey notes: 'The promotional unit, particularly driven by the two for 30 offer, has seen an increase from around 4% to about 8-9% of the liquor mix.'

Nearby the white spirits area is a highlight of the upgraded area with contemporary features set against a stark white wall and coloured mood lighting used to create a neon nightclub effect. It's bright, well-branded, colourful and accessible. 'It's a bit of a wow, isn't it?' Phil Shilson chuckles.

Vodka is the star - 'it's gone through the roof' says Petchey - with brands such as Smirnoff and Absolut underlining how much good display can bring white spirits to life. Bombay Sapphire and Gordon's lead the gin charge, which is also seeing"

Alpha Retail at Manchester Airport: "Specialist appeal

A range of specialist sectors complement the traditional categories in T2. Notes David King: 'We're about liquor, tobacco, fragrances, cosmetics, confectionery, sunglasses, watches and jewellery, accessories, handbags and small leathergoods, plus, on the periphery, electronics - and we're about brands.'

Accessories, especially handbags, are doing a roaring business from the revamped area.

King is particularly proud about the sunglasses wall (pictured above): 'It's our biggest success story of the past two years - it's blown everything else out of the water,' he enthuses. 'In fact I would be bold enough to say we are probably the best in the world.'

Prices range from 40-210. Passengers can try all models on - nothing is on chains. 'The golden rule of retail is to get product into people's hands,' he says.

The electronics section, called AMP, is influenced by the fact that T2 also has a Dixon's store, the leading UK specialist in consumer technology. King admits a generalist retailer cannot compete directly with such an offer, so the selection is tailored to the passenger profile.

'You need a low profile lead-in purchase and we will offer a select but quality offer that offers good value,' he says.

Adjacencies are key to the success of the store. AMP is alongside the wines & spirits area; while over the other side Chanel beauty is next to designer handbags.

The open display area for handbags is doing very well, according to Alpha's Liz Bowden. 'Brands such as Guess are proving very popular,' she says.

'When you have high value products you have to give them space,' says King, gesturing towards the roomy interior of the store and t"

Manchester Airport is very, very important to us, says David King, Executive Director of Alpha Airports Group. We have about 1,500 people here and about 20% of our turnover. Back to the main story.

Thats an important context in which to place the retail-to-catering companys offer at the UKs third-largest airport. Manchester handles over 20 million passengers a year and is enjoying significant passenger growth and route expansion, partly driven by low cost carrier growth.

Across the three terminals Alpha has a diverse retail offer, reflecting the varying nature not only of the passenger base in each but also the architecture and modernity of the premises. The jewel in the crown is terminal two where the recently revamped liquor, tobacco and specialities area is among the best retail refurbishments The Moodie Report has witnessed in recent years.

On a day-to-day basis it is in the capable hands of General Manager Phil Shilson, an 18-year company veteran and one of its most popular figures. Im the Alpha old boy, he laughs. I was with Alpha in T1 when we first won it.

Actually hes not so old and his enthusiasm and passion for the task at hand is totally infectious. If you like airports and if you like retail it doesnt get any better than this its the dream ticket, he says. So join The Moodie Report and Phil Shilson as we view the"

Alpha Airports Group Executive Director David King believes that maximising the airside minutes in an airport is key to pushing up revenues.

UK. David King talks a lot about joined-up thinking. The Alpha Airports Group Executive Director and driving force behind its UK and international retail business is adamant that airports and concessionaires have to work much more closely in targeting consumers at every point of their airport experience.

Dwell time is the real driver of this business, he notes. If you dont get joined-up thinking from the time the passenger arrives at the airport to the time they leave, you simply wont succeed. We are a second-tier service for consumers, selling non-essentials if you like. The first tier includes things like a CTN, a Boots store, foreign exchange, coffee shops and so on. I dont sell anything they need to buy, I sell everything they want or desire or would like to gift, so we're an emotional buy.

So maximising those minutes in an airport is absolutely key. We have to work with airports to the absolute limit in optimising dwell time its crucial.

But he gives short shrift to theories held in some quarters of the industry that concessionaires have an ever-lessening relevance in the modern airport world. In fact, he argues, theyre more important than "

BBC NEWS | Business | BAA seals Budapest airport deal

BBC NEWS | Business | BAA seals Budapest airport deal: "BAA is to take over the running of Budapest airport after triumphing in Hungary's largest privatisation.
The Heathrow and Gatwick owner made a 1.2bn (1.8bn euros) offer to buy a 75% stake in Ferihegy airport, which the government is privatising.
BAA will assume responsibility for the airport - one of the fastest growing in Europe - on 23 December.
Unions representing airport staff have criticised the sale, staging a strike over fears of job losses.
Booming airport
As well as gaining a controlling interest in the business, BAA has secured a 75-year licence to run the airport.
It is the biggest privatization in BAA's history

Mike Clasper, BAA chief executive
BAA outbid consortia headed by German companies Hochtief and Fraport.
'It is the biggest privatisation in Hungary's history and it is the biggest privatization in BAA's history too,' said chief executive Mike Clasper.
The airport is being sold to help finance its future development.
The number of passengers using the airport is rising sharply, boosted by the growth in budget airlines over the past 18 months.
Almost seven million passengers used the airport in the past 10 months, 27% higher than over the same period last year.
Budget airlines have flocked to the airport since Hungary joined the EU in May 2004.
There have been concerns that the deal - likely to be funded by BAA taking on additional debt - could constrain the company financially.
As well as the purchase price, the successful bidder will be obliged to invest 265m in upgrading the airport."

Views of the first newly-built houses in the Travel Retail Village. Above, pictured left to right: Alpha Airports Group CEO Kevin Abbott, Diageo Sri Lanka's Rahul Kashyap, Project Manager Chryshantha and Alpha Asia Managing Director Paul Topping
SRI LANKA. Alpha Airports Group CEO Kevin Abbott recently paid a visit to the Travel Retail Village to see for himself the unique building project conceived by the Alpha Sri Lanka Tsunami Relief Fund. The target date for the official handover of the first house is 12 January 2006.

Abbott visited the site, which will eventually house 20 tsunami-hit local families, with some of the fund's trustees including Alpha Asia Managing Director Paul Topping and Diageo Sri Lanka representative Rahul Kashyap.

Work is progressing well, said Topping, and the first ten houses should be ready for handover on 12 January.

Issuing an open invitation for anyone in the travel retail industry to attend the ceremony, Topping said: 'A number of travel retail supporters are joining the trustees and villagers for the event. If you are in the area, why not join in the celebrations?'

The Travel Retail Village foundation stones were laid in July, some six months after the tsunami tragedy struck. The Moodie Report visited the site in August to view the impressive progress first hand.

The fund aims to rehouse a whole village of tsunami-hit local people. The trustees said back in August that the fund had reached its target 'thanks to solidarity among the team and great determination plus enormous global support from the travel retail industry which has"

TheMoodieReport.com: "It lists only fragrances and customers cannot yet reserve or buy online, but World Duty Frees (WDF) new website (www.worlddutyfree.com) still generated over 10,000 visits in its first week.

That underlined the huge potential of online shopping for travel retailers, according to WDF Managing Director Mark Riches.

Speaking during the annual MEDFA conference in Dubai where he was the first day keynote speaker, Riches admitted that the company had entered the internet arena late but said it was now making up for lost time. He revealed that WDF is looking at ways to develop the medium further.

The fragrances website lists the prices as well as the range (and type) of fragrances stocked in WDFs various outlets. While potential customers can print out a list of products they are interested in, the actual ordering and purchasing has to be done in the shops.

How do we develop it? Do we take it to a selling channel? Riches asked, noting that retailers must also guard against the internet eroding footfall rates.

Riches was speaking during a well-received and often feisty question and answer session with conference moderator Martin Moodie.

Taking up Riches challenge for the press to be more critical of the retail sector, Moodie suggested that the average standard of travel retail websites was lousy'.

He said: Of all the websites that we have listed on our new consumer site (www.DutyFreeShoppingIndex.com), those airport or airline retailers that even show their product offer online is in the minority; the number that show their prices is in the tiny minority; the number that offer pre-order is miniscule and the number that even do a mildly good job of promoting the offer"

Media Week

Media Week: "Aviva to review 64m Norwich Union account
Insurance giant Aviva is reviewing its 64m Norwich Union media planning and buying account, held by Brand Connection.
Also, it is considering its options on the media business for the RAC business, which it recently acquired and is held by Vizeum.
Aviva has held a series of 'chemistry' sessions with leading agencies, regarding its insurance business. An appointment on Norwich Union is expected by the end of the year, but Aviva will be now reviewing media activities across the group following the acquisition of the RAC.
A spokesman for Norwich Union said: 'We are looking at all of our agency relationships as part of a review process due to the integration of the RAC into the company.'
Aviva purchased the rescue service for 1.1bn in March this year and is believed to be looking at the possibility of centralising both the RAC and Norwich Union accounts. Aviva said it was looking to 'exploit the brand strength' of the rescue service and sell its products to the company's 6.7 million members.
The umbrella brand Aviva is the world's sixth largest worldwide insurance firm and has 60,000 employees serving 30 million customers globally. The firm was formed from the merger of the CGU Group and Norwich Union in 2000 and rebranded to Aviva in July 2002. The firm had sales of 33bn during 2004 and managed 291bn of assets for its customers. The RAC deal complemented the company's motor insurance arm, Norwich Union Direct, a prime media spender within the organisation, placing 16m of media during 2004.
The company has faced challenges through high-profile campaigns from insurers and major supermarket brands, which now offer their own insurance services for consumers. Aviva has said it wants to become 'the Tesco of the insurance sector'.
"

Media Week

Media Week: "OMD UK has won the media planning and buying account for Aviva, covering the Norwich Union and RAC brands and estimated to be worth in the region of 75m.
The win marks the end of a fiercely contested pitch that consolidated Aviva's two main accounts into one single piece of media business for OMD.
OMD's will replace BrandConnection's on the Norwich Union end of the business and Vizeum's handling of the RAC media brief.
The Norwich Union account is worth around 65m a year and RAC spends around 10m on its media planning and buying.
Mediaedge:cia was also involved in the pitch.
Starcom was recently appointed by Aviva to handle a 10m media marketing campaign on the European continent. The agency was not involved in the UK pitch for the Norwich Union and RAC brands.
The media review was called after the 1.1bn takeover of the RAC by Aviva in March this year.
Nick Manning, chief executive of OMD UK, said: 'We've had a good year and we've been building up to this, and I'm very pleased for our team.'"

RAC: OMD wins accountLONDON - The newly combined Norwich Union and RAC media planning and buying account, estimated to be worth 80m, has gone to OMD meaning Brand Connection and Vizeum lose out.
The pitch was sparked by Norwich Union's parent company Aviva's 1.1bn acquisition of RAC in March. Brand Connection was the incumbent on Norwich Union for 21 years, while Vizeum handled RAC.
Colin Webb, marketing director at Norwich Union General Insurance, said: 'We are looking forward to building a tremendous business relationship with OMD to deliver efficiencies and effectiveness going forward.'
The work excludes online and below-the-line activity, which is currently under consideration.
Steve Williams, managing director of OMD UK, said: 'Colin Webb, Shaun Meadows and their teams have been a pleasure to work with during an interesting and rigorous pitch process; with team chemistry, integration and collaboration being high on their agendas. With these people and such great brands and services, we can do great work and we are looking forward to developing a successful partnership.'

Insurance Age - Imarket users eye personal lines addition: "Imarket users eye personal lines addition
Allianz Cornhill's imarket chief has stated that the system could be extended to include personal lines within 18 months if it proves a success.
Jason Potter, the insurer's commercial lines e-trading manager, told Insurance Age he was preparing for a campaign to persuade brokers of the benefits of the trading system, and convince them it was not another technological flash in the pan.
If this was a success, Mr Potter said the established personal lines EDI model may adapt to integrate with imarket.
'Familiarity is the key with imarket, the same as any piece of kit,' Mr Potter explained. 'This is an opportunity to help improve brokers' awareness, which is why we are now talking to larger brokerages and producing a benefits sheet with Acturis.'
Mr Potter acknowledged the potential of the system to create a common broking portal for the distribution of a variety of products, such as the email marketing service now available to users.
However, he said there was no desire to 'overload' brokers with products and move away from its core functions.
In addition, Royal & Sun Alliance (RSA) has become the latest insurer to go 'live' on imarket. Its first integrated product, Enterprise Shops, is now available to Acturis users, and RSA expects to follow this move with the launch of Enterprise Offices in early 2006.
Peter Knowles, strategy and marketing director at Polaris, the company behind imarket, said RSA's addition reinforced the 'building momentum' behind the industry initiative."

Insurance Age - Soundbytes: "Soundbytes
Jim Gaskin, Financial lines manager, Zurich Commercial
What is Executive Assurance (EA)?
We developed EA as a response to a growing demand by brokers to access directors & officers (D&O) quotes more easily. It also reflected the simpler underwriting required for the growing small and medium-sized enterprise (SME) sector that enabled a rules-based quote engine to be installed online.
It is a modular product designed for SMEs and providing core D&O cover plus four additional options of corporate liability, pension trustee liability, fidelity and legal expenses. It provides companies looking to buy D&O cover with the chance to select other products to suit their specific business needs.
How will it benefit brokers, saving time and money?
The broker only requires the name of a company or its registration number in order to quote and if required, bind on line. Access is available 24 hours, 365 days a year with no requirement to contact the insurer with supporting information such as a proposal form.
Is the system easy to use?
The system is designed to be very easy to use with very few steps required to achieving a quotation and delivering a quote in less than five minutes. The broker is able to print off the quote in order to discuss it with the customer. As the quote is stored and easily retrievable, it can be further tailored according to the customer's wishes. A couple more steps allow the broker to bind the product which will immediately produce an insurance agreement and full policy documents are automatically sent out within a few days.
How is this different to other systems?
We believe this is unique in terms of the number of products offered online as other markets focus only on D&O. It's also been designed so that no proposal form is required. We have als"
